Microsoft Certified Trainer
(MCT)

Section 1: Microsoft Certified Trainers

Microsoft Certified Trainers (MCTs) play an important role in Microsoft's education and certification process. Only trainers who intend to deliver Microsoft Official Curriculum (MOC) courses at Microsoft Certified Technical Education Centers (CTECs) are eligible to become MCTs.

MCTs are qualified instructionally and certified technically by Microsoft to deliver MOC instructor-led courses at Microsoft CTECs.

MOC is course material developed by Microsoft product groups to educate computer professionals who develop with, support, and implement solutions that use Microsoft technology.

Microsoft authorized education channels include Microsoft CTECs and the Microsoft Authorized Academic Training Program (AATP). As an MCT, you will primarily teach computer professionals within the CTEC channel; however, your MCT credential will be accepted in the AATP education channels.

Microsoft CTECs are training companies that are authorized to deliver Microsoft courses to computer professionals.

Microsoft AATP includes accredited institutions that are authorized to deliver Microsoft courses (less than twelve hours per week) to students enrolled at that institution.

Section 2: Steps to Become an MCT

This Microsoft Certified Trainer Guide (MCT Guide) contains two steps required to become an MCT: the MCT application approval process and the MCT course certification process for each MOC course. You may complete both steps concurrently, sending all applicable documentation to Microsoft at the same time for your MCT application approval and for all MCT course certifications for which you are seeking approval. Your MCT application must be approved, however, before you may receive any MCT course certifications.

Before you begin the application process, read the MCT Guide and the MCT application completely. If you have questions about any of the procedures, refer to Section 9 of this Guide for information about how to contact the Microsoft office in your region for assistance. Please note that some regions may charge an application-processing fee that may start at any time.

Send a completed MCT application to Microsoft.

Complete the MCT application
Fill out the entire MCT Application and include your signature. Your signature validates your acceptance of the terms and conditions of the MCT application agreement. You will have ninety (90) business days to obtain your first course certification. If you do not meet this requirement you must resubmit your MCT application, and pay all applicable fees.

Include proof of your instructional presentation skills as a technical trainer
To demonstrate that you possess instructional presentation skills, you must indicate on your MCT Application that you have completed one of the following options (include the required supporting documentation along with your MCT application as outlined below).

If you are a new technical trainer:

Prove that you have attended an instructional presentation skills or train-the-trainer course that has been pre approved by Microsoft. With your MCT application, include your course completion certificate from the presentation skills course you attended. For information about approved instructional presentation skills courses, visit the MCT public Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/mct/, or refer to Section 9 for information about how to contact Microsoft in your region.

If you are an experienced technical trainer:

Option 1: Prove that you are an experienced technical trainer by including with your MCT application your instructor completion certificate from any of the following vendors:

Novell
Lotus
Santa Cruz Operation
Banyan Vines
Cisco Systems
Sun Microsystems

Option 2: Become a Certified Technical Trainer (CTT). The CTT program was designed to certify technical presentation skills of technical trainers. Include with your MCT application your CTT completion certificate. For more information on the CTT Program, contact the Chauncey Group International by:

Phoning (800) 258-4914 in the United States
Sending electronic mail to cttp@ets.org
Visiting the Web site http://www.chauncey.com/itt/cttp001.html
Include proof of your MCP status

If you are a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP), include a copy of your latest MCP transcript with your MCT application. In most cases the exam(s) you have passed may be used toward MCT course certifications. You may obtain a copy of your latest MCP transcript by using the MCP Transcript tool on the navigation bar of the MCP Secure Web site at https://partnering.one.microsoft.com/mcp/. (Instructions for secure site access are at http://www.microsoft.com/mcp/redirect.htm.) Or you may send electronic mail to mcp@msprograms.com, or refer to Section 9 for information about how to contact the Microsoft office in your region for assistance.

If you are not an MCP, you will become one upon passing your first MCP exam. For more information about the program, visit the MCP Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/mcp/ or refer to Section 9 for information about how to contact Microsoft in your region for more information.

Submitting the MCT application only
As explained above, you may complete only the MCT application and send it, along with all required supporting documentation specified in the application, to Microsoft for approval, without applying for certifications to teach any MOC courses. You may choose to do this, but you will not be considered an MCT in full standing until you have completed the requirements for your first course certification. You will not yet be eligible for any of the MCT benefits or an MCT Welcome Kit. If you do not complete any course certification requirements within ninety (90) business days after your MCT application was approved, you must resubmit your application and pay all applicable fees again.

Please allow two (2) to three (3) weeks for processing. Remember, your application will not be considered complete unless it is accompanied by proof of your instructional skills and any applicable fees. Once your application has been approved, you will be notified by e-mail, and you will be granted access to the private MCT Web site. For information about how to access this site and newsgroups, see Section 8, "Accessing the Private MCT Web Site."

MCT Course Certification Process
There are three steps to obtaining the certification to teach an MOC course at a Microsoft CTEC. To locate the MCT course certification requirements, check the private MCT Web site, ask your Microsoft CTEC for assistance, or refer to Section 9 for information on reaching the Microsoft office in your region for assistance.

Once you select a course for which you would like to be certified, Microsoft suggests you complete the four steps listed below. You may, however, complete them in any order. For example, you may choose to finish all exam requirements before preparing to teach the course, or choose the order shown here:

Pass any required prerequisite MCP exam(s) to measure your current technical knowledge.
Prepare to teach an MOC course.
Pass any additional exam requirement(s) to measure any additional product knowledge that pertains to the course.
Submit your course preparation checklist to Microsoft so that your additional accreditation may be processed and reflect on your transcript.
Step 1: Pass any required prerequisite MCP exams to measure your current technical knowledge.
In preparing to teach an MOC course, you will be required to pass exams. Depending on the complexity of the course, you may need to take prerequisite exams. Passing these exams will ensure that you meet the course prerequisite knowledge and that you will proceed in your course preparation more successfully. Other exams may be listed as requirements to complete your course certification after you have prepared for the course. This list of exam(s) will measure your technical knowledge on the product(s) the course was written for. There are two types of exams:

MCP exams
MCP exams are developed to validate your mastery of technical competencies. Through rigorous performance-based testing, the MCP exams certify your ability to design, develop, implement, and support solutions with Microsoft products. Passing these exams will allow you to achieve additional MCP certifications, such as Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE), Microsoft Certified Solution Developer (MCSD), or Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA). See the MCP Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/train_cert/cert/ for more information about these programs.

Microsoft trainer exams
When no plans to develop an MCP exam for an MOC course exist, a trainer exam may be created. Trainer exams are not classified as certified; their purpose is to assess your technical competency relevant to the course for which they were developed. To prepare for a trainer exam, study the course objectives of the Trainer Kit and relevant Trainer Kit materials.

MCP and trainer exams are administered by Sylvan and VUE. To register for one of these exams, go to http://www.Sylvanprometric.com or http://www.VUE.com/MS. From here, candidates may choose to register via the Web or to look for registration telephone numbers in their region. For additional information, refer to Section 9, "Key Contacts."

Step 2: Prepare to teach an MOC course.
Every MOC course has an accompanying Microsoft Trainer Kit. The MOC trainer kits are identical to the student kits and will contain some or all of the following additional components:

Course preparation checklist. This document will guide you through the preparation process.
Classroom setup guide. This document will describe how to set up the instructor and student computers.
Course delivery guide. Each course module will have its own instructor delivery guide which contains preparation notes and resources.
Lab manual. This manual contains the lab material and the lab answers.
Lab disks or student CD. These media contain all files necessary to complete the course labs and any additional material for the student. This is the same student CD that is contained in the student kit of the same course.
Instructor disk or CD. These media contain the Microsoft PowerPoint® course presentation slides, course setup files, and additional resources such white papers and course-specific documents, as applicable.
Videotape. This videotape consists of the Microsoft subject matter expert discussing the courseware and the product.
For Microsoft Trainer Kit policies and ordering procedures, refer to Section 9.

Prepare by self-study. The materials included in the trainer kit enable you to successfully prepare yourself to teach any MOC course. For assistance, use the course preparation checklist, which shows all the activities you should complete before delivering any MOC course. After you have accomplished that, you can then apply for MCT certification to teach the course.

Prepare by attending the course. Auditing the MOC course you want to teach is an excellent method of preparation. The course will prepare you to teach by allowing you to obtain additional product knowledge, complete the labs, and observe the course flow and timings. The course you attend should be delivered by an experienced MCT who has at least two years of MOC experience and is either an MCSE or MCSD. Be sure to bring your own Trainer Kit to the course.

To take the course, you must meet course prerequisites, such as passing MCP exams or having work-related experience. Once you do, you have two options:

Attend a trainer-preparation (T-prep) course at a Microsoft CTEC. T-prep courses are designed for a trainer audience and focus on the course content, delivery methods, classroom setup, and labs.
Attend a public course offering of the MOC course at a Microsoft CTEC, participating as a student. You should bring your own Trainer Kit for use in the class.
The Microsoft CTEC T-prep course schedule is located on the private MCT Web site (see Section 8). Registration instructions are included in the schedule and vary per site. Watch the private MCT Web site for any future announcements about any online T-prep deliveries and orderability of T-preps on CD.

Step 3: Pass any additional exam requirement that pertains to the course.
To complete the course certification requirements, you may be required to pass additional MCP or Microsoft trainer exams. To locate the MCT course certification requirements, check the private MCT Web site, ask your Microsoft CTEC for assistance, or refer to Section 9 for information about how to contact Microsoft for assistance.

Step 4: Submit your course preparation checklist to Microsoft.
This ensures that additional accreditation may be processed and reflected on your transcript.

MCT Course Certification Approval
To become certified to teach your first course, you are required to attend this course as a student. It may be a publicly offered course or a T-prep of the course, when available. Attendance will allow you to observe the course flow and timing, complete the course labs, observe student-instructor interactions, and listen to questions and answers. The course you attend should be delivered by an experienced MCT who has two or more years of MOC experience years and is either an MCSE or MCSD.

You must also complete the course preparation checklist and the additional preparation steps described in it before you can apply for course certification.

Becoming an MCT
Once you have completed the MCT application and have met all the requirements for your first course certification, you will be approved as an MCT. See the MCT Application for a checklist of the required documentation. Refer to Section 9 for information about how to contact Microsoft in your region.

Section 5: Obtaining Additional MOC Course Certifications

To obtain course certifications for other MOC courses, follow the procedure listed in Section 2, Steps to Become an MCT: course approval process. You will have the choice to learn either through self-study or to attend the MOC course as a student. You must complete the course preparation checklist when applying for certification to teach any additional MOC courses.

To submit your course preparation checklist to Microsoft, see Section 9 for information on how to contact Microsoft in your region.

Provisional Certification—When an MOC course is released and the required exams are not available, certification to deliver the course may still be obtained. Any MCT who seeks provisional certification may be required to attend the course in addition to completing the course preparation checklist. The requirement to attend a course for provisional certification may vary. When attending the course is required for provisional certification, the course must include all modules and may be delivered in the classroom or online. When the required exam(s) is released, provisional certification for the course is updated to a certified status. Continuing certification reminders will be posted to the MCT private Web site. Any MCT who receives provisional certification for a course must pass the required exam(s) within sixty (60) business days of the exam release date. After Microsoft receives your passing score, your status will change to certified.

Section 6: Maintaining Your Certification

To maintain your Microsoft Certified Trainer status, you must:

Maintain high satisfaction ratings on student course evaluations. We encourage you to use an evaluation system at your Microsoft CTEC and use the results for your own personal feedback. Microsoft has a Web-based evaluation system that will send the results directly to our database, which will then be compiled into various reports. The Microsoft Online Evaluation System 1.5 is at http://www.microsoft.com/onlineeval/. The availability of this tool may vary per region.
Update your technical skills as new versions of Microsoft products are released. From time to time, you will be required to demonstrate your current technical expertise with Microsoft products by passing additional certification exams. You will have sixty (60) business days to pass these these exams to remain certified. You will see notifications on the private MCT Web site.
Comply with any and all applicable continuing certification criteria specified by Microsoft. Notices will be posted on the MCT Web site or by e-mail and will list a time period in which these certification requirements must be met.
Stay in touch with your local Microsoft field office. Microsoft encourages you to get involved with activities sponsored by your local Microsoft field office. The more face-to-face time you invest with Microsoft, the more familiar you will become to us in your market, which may open more opportunities for you as an MCT.
MCTs may be suspended from teaching or decertified for any of the following reasons:

Not passing required certification exams for continuing trainer certification.
Not satisfying all requirements for any continuing certification to maintain MCT status.
Consistently low student course evaluation ratings.
Delivering an MOC course without being fully certified in good standing.
Delivering an MOC course without using course materials in original form (for example, using photocopied student or trainer materials).
Ordering or attempting to order MOC from a Microsoft CTEC to hold a private or public course at a site other than a Microsoft CTEC. Only Microsoft CTECs and AATPs are authorized to order student materials and offer MOC courses.
Using the MCT logo in a manner that violates the terms and agreement you signed in the MCT application.
Not representing Microsoft and/or the Microsoft CTEC or AATP professionally and ethically.

Section 8: Accessing the Private MCT Web Site

The secure Web sites for MCTs have been moved from partnering.microsoft.com to partnering.one.microsoft.com, as part of the Microsoft Online ID Security Model.

If this is your first visit to a site that uses a Microsoft Online ID, please follow the instructions below.

Microsoft Online ID Registration Instructions
The Microsoft Online ID security system employs a one-time registration process that occurs the first time you access any Online ID secure site at Microsoft. By registering, you create your personal Microsoft Online ID account; the ID and password for this account will enable you to access all the secure sites you have rights to—with no further registration required.

The two tasks that must be completed to access one of the new secure sites on partnering.one.microsoft.com are:

Configuring Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x (if applicable)
Registering as a partnering.one.microsoft.com user
Browser Requirements

Your workstation will need to have either Internet Explorer 3.0 (or higher) or Netscape 3.0 (or higher) to access any of the new secure sites on partnering.one.microsoft.com.

Configuring Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x
If you are running Internet Explorer 4.x, you must configure it to accept the proper HTTP protocol in order to access partnering.one.microsoft.com. This change will not impact your ability to access other Internet sites. If you are running an older version of Internet Explorer or running Netscape, skip this section and go directly to Registering as a partnering.one.microsoft.com user. To configure Internet Explorer 4.x:

Open Internet Explorer.
In the View menu, click Internet Options. The Internet Options dialog box appears.
